As of Enterprise Studio 3.1, a new Business Model Canvas is available in the ArchiMate® model for a tighter integration with the ArchiMate modeling language and with other canvas-based strategy views in the ArchiMate model. It replaces the Business Model Canvas in the BMC metamodel.

This topic discusses the Business Model Canvas in the BMC metamodel, and mainly serves as support for existing BMC models. For modeling a new Business Model Canvas, please refer to Modeling a Business Model Canvas. For general information about the Business Model Canvas in ArchiMate models, see Strategy and business modeling in Enterprise Studio.

Each sticky note in a Business Model Canvas has its own default ArchiMate concept assigned, based on the canvas building block the sticky note is placed in.

When a Business Model Canvas is mapped onto an ArchiMate model, ArchiMate objects are created based on the ArchiMate concepts attached to the sticky notes. The default mapping of the BMC elements to ArchiMate concepts is shown in the table below. It is based on the concepts of the latest ArchiMate standard.

BMC element

ArchiMate concept

Business interface

Cost structure

Value + associated core element

Customer relationship

Business collaboration

Customer segment, Key partner

Key activity

Key resource

Revenue stream

Value + associated core element

Value proposition

Product + Value

Instead of the default concept, a sticky note may have been assigned a different ArchiMate concept, which will result in different ArchiMate objects after mapping.
