The Business Outcome Journey Map can help model the business outcomes of an organization in relation to the value streams that are realizing it, to the value propositions they can offer to their customers, and to the analysis of the capabilities, which are making all of this possible. In case adjustments need to be made, the Business Outcome Journey Map can help with identifying which capabilities need to be improved in order to provide a better value to customers. A Business Outcome Journey Map depicts various aspects of a value stream:
- the main outcome and stakeholder of the value stream
- the stages of the value stream
- the goals and outcomes of the different stages and the value propositions they produce
- the capabilities needed for each stage
The Business outcome journey map is one of the business model views for ArchiMate® modeling and makes use of specific ArchiMate concepts and relations.
The metrics you add to the Business Outcome Journey map will only be associated with the graphical objects in this view, not with the semantical objects. Therefor, the metrics will not be present on the same objects when used elsewhere in the model, unless you add the metrics there as well. But be aware when you do, there will be no connection between them; changing the value of a metric on an object in the Business Outcome Journey Map will not change the value in the same metric on the object elsewhere, and vice versa.

Adding a new Business Outcome Journey Map
- In your ArchiMate model in the model browser, right-click the folder in which you want to add the Business Outcome Journey Map, and then click New > Business model > Business outcome journey map.
- Click the newly added view in the model browser to open it. An empty view is shown.
- Add an Outcome, Stakeholder, and a Value stream element to the view. To do this, create new elements by using the Create pane or the quick-create pop-up window, or add existing elements from your ArchiMate model by dragging them from the model browser onto the view.
Defining the business outcome and stakeholder details
Define the business outcome and stakeholder details in their respective blocks by adding a description, and adding metrics to the stakeholder in order to reflect additional knowledge about the stakeholder. The metrics need to be of a type with enumeration values and have at least two values.
- Add a description to the business outcome and stakeholder blocks.
- Select the stakeholder block, and click
Each metric has a defined type, which influences what kind of scale is used for measuring the metric. The values of the scale are available in the slider below the metric name. Click the slider and set it to the desired value.
The metrics you add will only be associated with the graphical object of the Stakeholder in this map, not with the semantical object. Therefor, the metrics will not be present on the same object used elsewhere in the model, unless you add the metrics there as well. But be aware when you do, there will be no connection between them; changing the value of a metric in the object in the Business Outcome Journey Map will not change the value on the same metric on the object elsewhere, and vice versa.
Defining the value stream stages
Generally, the journey of a business outcome involves multiple stages of the value streams realizing the outcome. To reflect the multiple-stage process, define the stages of the value stream, and add them to the Business Outcome Journey Map.
- Add one or more Value stream elements to the map that represent the stages. To do this, create new elements by using the Create pane or the quick-create pop-up window, or add existing elements from your ArchiMate model by dragging them from the model browser onto the view. The stages are automatically placed next to the value stream in the map.
When creating new elements, you can also add the first stage via the canvas menu by selecting > Value stage, and after that use the plus controls on the stage for adding additional stages: - Specify the duration of the stages. Click in a stage, and set the amount of time and time unit.
Defining the goals and outcomes of the stages
The business outcome comes with a number of goals that need to be achieved in every stage of the journey. If desired, outcomes of these goals can also be defined.
- Open the canvas menu .
- Add Goal and Outcome elements to the different stages in the block by creating new elements or dragging existing ones from the model browser onto the block cells.
Defining the value propositions
Define the value propositions that are produced by the goals and outcomes of the different value steam stages.
- Open the canvas menu, click
- Add Value elements to the different stages in the block to define the value propositions by creating new elements or dragging existing ones from the model browser onto the block cells.
Defining the capabilities
Define the capabilities needed for each stage to realize the business outcome.
- Open the canvas menu, click
- Add Capability elements to the block by creating new elements or dragging existing ones from the model browser onto the block cells.
Defining metrics for the capabilities
Finally, you can include metrics in the Business Outcome Journey Map to score the values for the capabilities. For example the perceived value from the stakeholder's perspective across the stages of the journey, or the cost or performance of the capabilities. The metrics need to be of a type with enumeration values and have at least two values.
- Open the canvas menu, click , and select Metrics to add the Metrics block to the map.
- Add one or more metrics to the map: select the Metrics block, and click to select a metric, or drag metrics from the model browser onto the block.
The names of the selected metrics are shown at the bottom of the block.
You can show and hide a metric by clicking the next to a metric name.
If you prefer to use a different color scheme for the lines with metric values, select the Metrics block, click , and select a color scheme. - Score the metrics for each capability by adjusting the values of the data points. To do this, click a data point and drag it either upwards or downwards towards the desired value. The available values are shown at the right side of the Metrics block.
The end result is a complete Business Outcome Journey Map:
