Enterprise Studio supports two approaches to time modeling with ArchiMate® models: roadmapping and life cycle management.
Roadmaps can be used for visualizing the alternative and possible paths of going from baseline architecture to target architecture in an enterprise architecture transformation. Modeling is done in the Roadmap view, in which all kinds of objects can be related to a timeline, supporting transformations in transition architectures.

Life cycle management
Life cycle management allows you to model, analyze and visualize the stages through which an object in an enterprise (architecture) passes during its lifetime. Different types of objects may have different life cycles, each with their own custom stages.

Alternative ways for modeling transitions over time
The most common way for time modeling is using the Roadmap view or Life cycle view. Alternative ways for modeling transitions over time without actually using a timeline include using the "Life cycle" or "Roadmap" profile, or plateaus. These are more common in the context of implementation and migration.
By linking the "Life cycle" profile to an element in a view, it can be assigned a life cycle stage or phase attached to a plateau, representing a relatively stable state of the architecture during a limited period of time. This profile distinguishes the life cycle phases In development, In use, Out of date, and Out of use. By comparing different views, differences in the stages of the transformation can be found.
Using the "Life cycle" and "Roadmap" profile, or modeling plateaus is not addressed in the time modeling documentation.
