You can use charts to visualize timed data in your ArchiMate® models. All chart types in Enterprise Studio support the use of timed data. Timed data may be for example life cycle stages with dates linked to them, or maintenance costs over a period of time. Some chart types support the display of multiple timed values for multiple elements, other chart types like the performance meter, traffic light, and score chart only support showing a single value for a single element on a specific date.

The figure below shows a few examples of timed values of application components, displayed in various types of charts.

Configuring a chart for showing timed data

  1. Create a chart of your choice on an ArchiMate view, and define the chart's population .

  2. Open the chart's settings window , and on the Time tab, activate Use timed values.

  3. Open the chart's dimensions window , and set the dimension(s) for the chart. In case of multiple dimensions, you can choose to select the same attribute or metric for each dimension in order to show values of one attribute or metric over time (if the chart supports this). You can also choose different attributes and/or metrics, and show their value for a specific time. The figure below shows an example of the dimensions set for a table chart.

  4. In the dimensions window, below Date, a date field and controls are available for configuring the timed data. Determine which dates you want to use for showing the associated value, and configure this. The figure below shows all three options set for a table chart, and the results in the chart.

If there is no timed value available for a specified date, Enterprise Studio will search back in time through the timed data for the nearest timed value, and will show that value, in italics.

These options are not available for the line chart. A line chart automatically shows the dates linked to the timed data along the x-axis. (As a result of activating the option Use timed values, the type of x-axis has automatically been set to "date" on the Definition tab of the line chart settings.)

    • If you want to show a timed value for a specific date, click , and select the date.

    • If you want to show a timed value for a specific time offset relative to the chart's reference date, click , and set the desired time offset. Set the desired reference date at the chart's time settings.

    • If you want to show the fixed (or timeless) value of an attribute or metric instead of the timed value, click .

  5. Optional: The following additional options can be set at the chart's time settings, if desired. Whether a specific setting is available depends on the chosen chart type.

Show reference date: Activate this option if you want to include the reference date in the chart title. The date set in Reference date will be added to the chart title.

Time interval x-axis: Only available in the line chart. By default, all defined dates from the available timed data will be shown on the x-axis, provided that there is enough room on the axis (resizing the chart can help).

If you want to limit the time period that is shown, specify the desired start date and end date here. Only the timed values from that period will then be shown in the chart. You can also change these dates by clicking the first and last date on the x-axis and change them.

Show period: Only available in the line chart. If you have set a start date and end date to limit the time period shown in the chart, you can activate this option to include this time period in the chart title.
